Nesbitt blasts governor’s plan to raid teacher pensions fund

LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, issued the following statement Friday after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that she plans to redirect $670 million of Michigan Public School Employees’ Retirement System (MPSERS) payments as part of her 2025 state budget proposal next week:

“Raiding the state’s teacher pensions fund to play shell games with tax dollars because of short-term political ambitions, while the fund is still $30 billion in debt, is irresponsible and puts the state and payment fund at risk in the future. The state has an obligation to taxpayers to use their dollars appropriately — that includes responsibly paying down our burdensome debts in order to free up future resources and ensure the prosperity of our state.”
