LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, on Thursday issued the following statement blasting Senate Democrats for passing bills previously vetoed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and focusing more on party infighting than helping struggling families make it in Michigan:
“Michigan Democrats are no longer fighting Republicans. They are fighting each other — and losing the plot. Their party has been hijacked by extremists. Socialism and antisemitism are no longer on the fringes of their party — they’re part of their party’s platform, and there is no room for dissent. Their own attorney general skipped the party convention because she didn’t feel safe from antisemitism in her own party. Their two-term governor stayed home. The entire Democratic congressional delegation stayed home. That was not a scheduling conflict. That was a walkout.
“Today, Senate Democrats just passed nine bills their own governor vetoed weeks ago. They didn’t do it for our kids whose reading scores are at the bottom of the nation. They didn’t do it to fix the roads. They didn’t do it to lower costs for families or put more money back in working families’ pockets by lowering property taxes. They did it to prove Gretchen Whitmer is no longer in charge of their party.
“Michigan kids still can’t read, and Michigan families are still waiting for someone to do the job. The people of this state did not send anyone here to wage a civil war inside the Democrat Party. They sent us here to govern. Today, Democrats chose the war instead of governing.”
