Nesbitt celebrates deal to save Michigan’s tip credit system, urges compromise on remaining legislation to protect jobs

LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, on Thursday issued the following statement after the Senate approved legislation to preserve the state’s tip credit system, a significant step forward in protecting more than 50,000 Michigan jobs:

“For months, Speaker Hall and I have been inviting Democrats to come to the table and work together on a solution to save 50,000 jobs and avoid an economic catastrophe that will be felt across our state. Today, they finally joined us in listening to the voices of the thousands of Michigan servers and bartenders who have been asking for our help and refused to bend to the pressures of big unions and out-of-state special interests.

“This bipartisan compromise is a successful first step in finding a solution to save the businesses that make Michigan great. I also look forward to working toward a resolution that will allow our businesses to continue providing reasonable, responsible and flexible paid leave time for hardworking families. Michigan’s diverse economy cannot afford heavy-handed one-size-fits-all mandates. Let’s finally solve these issues and prevent this looming economic disaster from wreaking havoc on our state.”
