Nesbitt blasts Dems for refusing to protect Michiganders from fentanyl trafficking, U.S. border crisis

LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, on Wednesday issued the following statement after Senate Democrats refused to consider legislation to protect Michigan residents against deadly fentanyl trafficking and the high costs impacting self-proclaimed sanctuary communities as the U.S. border crisis takes its toll across the nation:

“Once again, the Democrat majority has chosen to cater to their special interests rather than working to solve real problems to improve the quality of life for the people of Michigan. It is a tragedy that they are using their slim majority to protect milkweed and butterflies rather than working on commonsense solutions to protect the people of this state from the lethal trafficking of fentanyl into our local communities. Instead, they continue to bury their heads in the sand, refusing to acknowledge the devastation being caused by Joe Biden’s failed open-border policies.

“Senate Republicans have introduced bills to tackle this crisis. Every day, we are losing a growing number of Michiganders friends, neighbors, family members to fentanyl addiction and overdoses. Fentanyl is streaming across the open border at lethal rates, yet Democrats are focused on butterflies.”

Senate Democrats struck down two measures to tie-bar Strong Borders, Safe Communities legislation introduced by Senate Republicans earlier this month to a bill to redefine milkweed, addressing the control and eradication of noxious weeds.
