Nesbitt: Nursing home report ‘tragic and appalling’

LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, on Friday issued the following statement after an investigation was published by The Detroit News concerning Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s disastrous unilateral nursing home directives:

“The results of the investigation by The Detroit News are tragic and appalling.

“While there were many unknowns in the early days of Covid-19, the risk posed by the virus to our vulnerable seniors in nursing homes was clear. Experts warned the governor of the dangers posed by her policy within 72-hours of the virus arriving in our state, yet she stubbornly refused to reverse course. When the Republican Legislature sent her a bipartisan bill to end her calamitous policy, she vetoed it.”

“The three-year delay in complying with this information request about the loss of thousands of lives also raises serious ethical questions that must be answered by this administration. Withholding the documents until shortly after her reelection does not pass the smell test and is yet another slap in the face to the families who have waited years for answers to why they lost their loved ones.”
